History of MTAM

The state chapter of MTMA started with Roberta (Metzler) Kagin, Judith Jellison, and David Wolfe. They met in Roberta's basement, and the first constitution was drafted. In 1974-1976, Roberta was the President of the Great Lakes Region of NAMT, and Augsburg College and the state chapter hosted the Regional Conference at the Radisson South Hotel. Garrison Keillor was the entertainer for the banquet. Robert A. Schmitt (founder of Schmitt Music Co.) was at the head table. From 1971-74, Roberta was the music therapist at the Behavioral Learning Center, a new experimental public school program in St. Paul. She taught an evening class in "The Influence of Music on Behavior" at the University of Minnesota in 1973, and began the undergraduate major (B.S. in music therapy) at Augsburg in 1974. There have been at least 30 practicum placements that have been developed in Minnesota as a result of Augsburg students reaching into the community.
